CIS Controls v8.1 Assessment

Build the security baseline before the framework stack.

CIS is useful when you need a practical answer to a basic question: what should this organization be able to do reliably before it layers on more assurance requirements? We use CIS Controls v8.1 to establish the baseline, fit the right Implementation Group, and sequence safeguards around actual capability.

Implementation Group fit

Do not inherit a maturity target your organization cannot operate.

The right baseline depends on data sensitivity, threat exposure, business criticality, internal capability, and the consequence of failure.

IG1

Essential cyber hygiene

Establish a reliable foundation for organizations with limited security complexity and lower exposure.

IG2

Managed security capability

Expand safeguards where sensitive data, multiple business units, customer expectations, or greater exposure require more structure.

IG3

Higher-consequence environments

Address sophisticated threats and high-impact systems where failure carries substantial operational or societal consequence.

Safeguard hierarchy

The baseline is a system of capabilities, not 18 isolated control families.

What you are buying

A staged security roadmap your team can actually execute.

  1. 01

    Establish the baseline.

Determine the appropriate Implementation Group and where foundational safeguards are missing or inconsistent.

  2. 02

    Separate foundational from advanced work.

Do not let sophisticated initiatives outrun asset, identity, configuration, logging, backup, or response basics.

  3. 03

    Reuse what already works.

Map existing tools and practices to the safeguards they support before adding technology.

  4. 04

    Sequence the roadmap.

Prioritize based on dependency, risk reduction, effort, operating capacity, and other requirements the baseline must support.

Questions before you buy

What buyers usually need clarified.

Is CIS a certification?

No. The CIS Controls are a practical security framework. This engagement establishes and prioritizes a baseline; it is not a certification program.

Which version do you use?

CIS Controls v8.1, the current version of the framework. It consolidated the safeguard structure around Implementation Groups and reduced overlap between control families, which is part of why choosing the right Implementation Group matters more here than simply counting how many safeguards are checked off.

Can this support SOC 2, ISO 27001, or customer requirements?

Yes. A strong baseline can support multiple assurance goals, but the assessment is designed around security capability first rather than audit artifacts.

How is this different from a vulnerability scan?

A vulnerability scan finds technical weaknesses in specific systems. This assessment evaluates whether the broader set of CIS safeguards, across people, process, and technology, are implemented and sequenced correctly.

Do you help implement the roadmap afterward?

The assessment produces a roadmap your team can execute directly. Ongoing implementation support, Fractional CISO leadership, or Continuous Compliance can be scoped separately if useful.

A bounded engagement

Build the baseline once. Let the framework stack inherit it.

Bring us the current controls, security roadmap, customer pressure, or uncertainty about what should come first. We will establish the baseline and sequence the work.

You do not need to diagnose the exact engagement before contacting us. Bring the pressure, milestone, or decision.
